How to actually choose a habit tracker (and why most of them suck)

I feel like I’ve downloaded and deleted about 50 different habit trackers over the last few years.

It usually goes exactly like this: I get super motivated on a random Sunday night, download an app that looks cool, spend an hour setting up my entire life... and then by Thursday, I haven’t opened it once.

If you're stuck in this cycle too, the problem honestly might not be your discipline. It’s probably just that the app doesn't actually fit how your brain works.

Here’s what I’ve realized after testing way too many of them, crying a little over broken streaks, and finally figuring out what works.

1. Figure out what actually motivates you.

Some people need crazy gamification—like turning their life into an RPG where they fight monsters for drinking water. Others want hardcore data, pie charts, and spreadsheets.

For me? Visual clutter totally stresses me out. If an app has ads, five different tabs, and a social feed, my brain just shuts down. I realized I just needed something that looked really clean and minimal so I could get in, check off my habits, and get out without feeling overwhelmed.

2. Think about privacy (seriously).

It’s kinda weird how many apps want you to make an account and upload your sleep schedules or workout routines to their cloud. Why do they need that? I strongly prefer apps that are "local-first," meaning all your data just stays on your actual phone.

3. You need a system that doesn't punish you.

This is the biggest one. Most trackers use the "all-or-nothing" streak system. You build a 20-day streak, you get the flu and miss a day, and the app resets you to a big fat zero. It’s the most demotivating feeling ever and usually exactly why I quit. You need a tracker that doesn't punish you for being a normal human whose life gets messy sometimes.

Because I couldn’t find an app that nailed all these things without feeling bloated, I actually ended up building my own called HabLoop.

I made it specifically for people who want a really minimal, distraction-free aesthetic (it's heavily inspired by the Nothing OS design which I absolutely love). It has zero ads, everything is stored locally on your device for privacy, and I added a "Streak Shield" feature so you can freeze your streak if you just need a rest day. It also has home screen widgets so you don't even have to open the app to check stuff off.

If you're tired of the bloated apps and want something that just gets out of your way, you should give it a try. It honestly changed how I approach my mornings.

Anyway, whatever you end up using, just remember the best tracker is the one that actually removes friction from your day. Don't overcomplicate it!
