What's the 3-3-3 Rule for Building Habits Successfully?

Whenever I used to try and overhaul my life, I would always make the same massive mistake: I’d try to change absolutely everything all at once.

I’d wake up on a Monday and say, "Okay, starting today I’m going to run 5 miles, read a book a week, meditate for an hour, learn Spanish, and drink 3 gallons of water." By Wednesday, I was completely burnt out, lying on the couch watching TikTok.

Then I learned about the 3-3-3 rule. It honestly changed the game for me, and it's so incredibly simple.

Here is how it works to stop you from burning out:

1. Pick 3 Habits Maximum.

Do not add 15 things to your habit tracker. Pick exactly three things you want to change. For example: 1. Drink a glass of water when I wake up. 2. Read 10 pages of a book. 3. Stretch for 5 minutes. That’s it. If you try to do more than three, your brain treats it like an overwhelming chore list instead of a gentle routine.

2. Do them for 3 Weeks.

Just commit to three weeks (21 days). Now, science says it actually takes closer to 66 days to form a permanent habit, but three weeks is the perfect mental milestone. It’s long enough to see if the habit actually adds value to your life, but short enough that it doesn't feel like a scary, permanent life sentence.

3. Take 3 Days to Evaluate.

After the three weeks, stop and actually look at how it went for three days. Did reading 10 pages make you feel better? Was stretching actually helping your back? If yes, keep them. If they felt forced and awful, drop them guilt-free.

I actually built my habit tracker, HabLoop, with this kind of focused philosophy in mind. I wanted an app that didn't overwhelm you with features or pressure you to do 50 things a day.

HabLoop lets you easily group your habits into small routines (like a Morning Stack) so you can knock out your 3 daily goals seamlessly. Plus, the Nothing OS-inspired minimal design keeps you focused on just checking off the boxes without getting distracted.

Try the 3-3-3 rule this week and let me know how it goes. And if you need a clean, private tracker to help you along the way:
